Female Mental Health Support Worker — Trauma-Informed Support

Location: Berwick, VIC

Provider: CarePro

Employment Type: Casual / Flexible Shifts

Participant: Adult with complex mental health needs

About the Role

CarePro is seeking a compassionate, patient and experienced female Mental Health Support Worker to support a participant in Berwick who has complex mental health needs and a significant history of trauma.

Trauma-informed practice is a non-negotiable requirement for this role. We are looking for someone who understands the impact of complex trauma, can build trust gradually, respects personal boundaries and recognises that engagement may take time.

Initially, shifts may be very short, potentially around one hour, as the participant gradually becomes comfortable with support. The role requires flexibility, patience and an understanding that the participant may not always wish to communicate or actively engage during a shift.

Support may take place inside the participant’s home, outdoors during a gentle walk, or remotely via phone or telehealth, depending on the participant’s comfort level and support needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide trauma-informed, person-centred mental health support.
  • Build rapport and trust at the participant’s pace, without pressure or expectations.
  • Respect the participant’s boundaries, choices and need for space.
  • Offer calm, reassuring and consistent support, even when the participant does not wish to engage.
  • Provide companionship and gentle encouragement to participate in activities, including walks or spending time outdoors, when appropriate.
  • Be comfortable providing face-to-face support as well as phone or telehealth-based support.
  • Recognise potential signs of distress and respond calmly, respectfully and in accordance with the participant’s support plan.
  • Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality and clear communication with the CarePro team.
  • Follow relevant support plans, risk management strategies and escalation procedures.

Essential Requirements

  • Female applicants only, in accordance with the participant’s support requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting people with complex mental health needs.
  • Strong understanding and practical experience in trauma-informed care.
  • Ability to work sensitively with people who have experienced significant or complex trauma.
  • Exceptional patience, empathy, emotional awareness and communication skills.
  • Comfortable with short, flexible shifts, including shifts of approximately one hour initially.
  • Comfortable providing support when the participant may choose not to communicate or actively participate.
  • Ability to work independently while following CarePro’s policies and the participant’s support plan.
  • Current NDIS Worker Screening Check and other relevant employment checks, as required.

Relevant qualifications in mental health, community services, psychology, counselling or a related field are highly regarded.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will be calm, emotionally mature, reliable and genuinely committed to supporting people with complex trauma. You will understand that building a therapeutic relationship takes time and that progress may initially be measured by simply establishing a sense of safety and trust.

You must be comfortable with uncertainty, able to adapt your approach to the participant’s needs and willing to provide support without placing pressure on the participant to engage.

This role is particularly suited to someone with experience in psychosocial disability, complex trauma, mental health recovery or trauma-informed community support.
